The LIFE chair has achieved a Sustainable Gold rating under the SMaRT© Consensus Sustainable Product Standard for Knoll, Inc.  SMaRT (Sustainable Materials Rating Technology) certification is based on the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED model, and was developed by The Institute for Market Transformation to Sustainability (MTS). SMaRT is distinguished from other certification programs as follows: it is a transparent, consensus, quantified sustainable product standard that measures environmental benefits throughout the global supply chain.

Formway contributed to the certification with a Life Cycle Assessment study of LIFE, peer reviewed by LCA experts at Landcare Research New Zealand. LCA is a science-based measurement of a product's environmental impacts throughout its life cycle, from raw materials sourcing through manufacturing, shipping, use, and re-use or end-of-life. Use of Life Cycle Assessment is an integral part environmental design and product development at Formway.
