The selection of GRID & LIFE furniture for the project recognised Formway’s environmental stance and contributed to winning the 6 Green Star rating.
Australia’s first 6 Star Green rated building, showcasing sustainable office design, has been awarded to the City of Melbourne for their new landmark building, Council House 2 displays an unprecedented level of innovation in environmental design. The building enhances indoor air quality and staff productivity, with clean fresh air and non toxic surfaces working to improve staff’s health.
Formway embraced the design intent of Council House 2, using environmental design and life cycle management techniques to deliver sustainable office furniture.
the design process
Formway’s response to the brief was to customise their GRID workstation system. The Formway FIT Team developed a fully resolved design within the tender timeframe. The chosen solution for seating was the LIFE chair.
GRID has been adopted by many clients globally for its ability to manage change and reduce reconfiguration costs. GRID’s characteristic adaptability allowed it to meet the specifications requested by City of Melbourne. Innovative modifications included powder coated work surfaces and acoustic screen barriers.

evaluation
Formway offered well resolved products, clarity of information and a willingness to embrace the design intent of Council House 2. Formway is continuing the journey of environmental design and life cycle management.
In working together with City of Melbourne and Centre for Design at RMIT on the Council House 2 project, the whole Formway project team sharpened their environmental competence.They clearly demonstrated their ability to deliver sustainable office products. The experience gained in this project lives on with people across the company.
Setting an example for the industry, Formway has appointed its own dedicated Environmental Manager, whose role is to lead the company to find more sustainable ways to deliver furniture products to the world. This commitment to a sustainable future is indicative of Formway’s philosophy and position as a global thinking company.
